William Marshall
Bill was born, raised and educated in Raleigh. He attended N.C. State University, where he was a Senior Class officer and lettered in varsity tennis. He paid his way through college by working nights and weekends at WRAL-TV.
Upon graduation, Bill was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. After a tour of duty in Korea, he was promoted to captain and assigned to a Special Task Force for training and implementation of troops assigned to Vietnam.
After completing this service in the Army, Bill enrolled in law school at Wake Forest University, where he graduated at the top of this class. He was elected President of Phi Delta Theta and held other honorary offices.
Shortly after law school, Bill was awarded a position with the North Carolina Supreme Court under Justice I. Beverly Lake. During this tenure with the Supreme Court, he learned the intricacy of appellate procedures.
To sharpen this trial skills, Bill began his litigation career for a law firm that handled defense case for insurance companies and spent four years in and out of the court room.
In 1974, Bill opened his own law firm and concentrated on criminal law and personal injury. As his practice developed, he expanded to family law as well as commercial and residential real estate closings.
During these early years of his career, Bill was also a part-time professor of business law at N. C. State University. He taught courses primarily to pre-CPA students that included contracts law, torts, business and judicial procedures.
In the early '90s, he turned his focus to family law. As his practice grew, he was joined by Sonya DuBree, and they concentrated on all aspects of family law, including but not limited to custody, child support, alimony, separation agreements and domestic violence. Recently, his practice expanded to include collaborative law.
In 2000, Bill was certified as a mediator. His approach to cases is to attempt out-of-court settlement through negotiation, mediation or arbitration. However, his 30 years of trial experience allow him to fully and accurately evaluate client risk and likely outcome of litigation.
As a result of his experience, his hourly rate is $300 per hour; litigation is $325 per hour. Initial office conference is $250. He also recommends arbitration which is $300 per hour.
Since there is a backlog of cases in the court system, Bill has a goal to expedite a case as efficiently as possible to spare the client unnecessary expense when going through such a difficult time.
